We are officially in advent and Christmas is only a few weeks away. Although the time will pass quickly, you needn’t let the pressure get the better of you. Don’t make the mistake of panic buying gifts that your friends and family wont even like. If you’re struggling for ideas, then nothing says Happy Christmas more than a homemade hamper full of delicious treats to enjoy over the festive period.

Here at Pink Lady® we have put together a guide to the perfect homemade Christmas hamper, to help you avoid the mad dash and add a personal touch this Christmas.

History

Dating back to William the Conqueror’s time on the British throne, hampers were initially used as charitable offerings for those in need, containing all manner of food, various drinks and even clothes. While the purpose of hampers has changed over the course of hundreds of years, it is the Victorians who started gifting hampers at Christmas time; referenced several times in the novels of Charles Dickens, who was himself a customer of Fortnum and Mason; famed for their Christmas hampers.

What to included?

Whether you take the traditional approach or want to explore some slightly modern alternatives, there really is no limit to what you can include in your homemade Christmas hamper. Think of things that you might not normally have throughout the year, or some indulgent items that you would want to eat yourself as a treat. Some items that you might want to consider adding to your hamper are:

  • Good quality chocolates
  • Fortified wines or ports
  • Nuts and savoury snacks
  • Festively spiced cakes or pies
  • Jams, chutneys or homemade mincemeat
  • Don’t forget the cheese and quality crackers

Adding the extra touches

To add that extra personal touch, you can ramp up your Christmas hamper with some homemade decorations. Try opting for tartans; reds, greens and golds for the traditional festive look and feel. Making your own hamper additions really showcases that extra, personal touch, so why not try making your own chutney, cakes or mince pies? Our naturally sweet Pink Lady® apples make for the ideal ingredient to all of these.

If you’re struggling to find the time, or you’re not one for homemade gifts, then why not check out our exclusive hamper competition, where we will be giving away 5 luxury hampers and 30 Pink Lady shopping bags to runners up.
