As part of our ongoing support for FareShare, the UK’s leading food distribution charity, we launched a special Valentine’s Day on-pack promotion exclusive to Co-op stores in February.

The promotion, which saw 24,000 apples donated to FareShare on behalf of Co-op customers, also enabled customers to enter a competition to win a spa break. The donation of apples reached 98 charities and community groups helping to support those most vulnerable across the UK this spring.

Insights show that during the pandemic FareShare donations increased to three million meals a week at the peak of the crisis. The provision of apples from Pink Lady® were donated mostly to low-income families, as well as school children and the homeless.

Best Start and Smile Community Pantry in Aberdeen is a pantry-style food scheme which provides access to affordable and healthy foods, toiletries, baby products and household items. A spokesperson from the scheme said: “We distributed these apples to families on low incomes who access our community pantry – they were very pleased with the fact that these were Pink Lady® apples and the quality was great. One little girl had a big smile on her face when she received her Pink Lady®!”

Kareen McDonald, Business Development Executive, at FareShare said: “The Pink Lady® apples were absolutely brilliant, really top quality and the charities we supplied them to gave us the same feedback. We don’t often get feedback specific to the food we share, outside of the thanks for our services, and so the charities were obviously really impressed as they were such high quality.”

We are proud to have been supporting FareShare since July 2020, donating to their Christmas and Summer holidays appeals, as well as the recent Valentine’s appeal. So far, we have donated over 114,000 apples reaching 551 charities and our financial contributions have purchased the equivalent of 42,400 meals in the fight to combat hunger and poverty.
