Michael Meisen from Germany was the 2018 winner for his image ‘The art of being an apple’ so we took time out to catch up with him.

Please tell us a little more about yourself and your background in photography

I'm a professional photographer, working in my studio in Frankfurt's East End near the European Central Bank. I am specialized in food photography and I love it!

Please tell us more about capturing your Finalist image. For example; what was happening around you, what inspired the shot, what time of day, challenges you had in capturing it.

The shot was inspired by early Netherlandish Still Life’s with flowers and fruit. I was fascinated by the perfection and elaborate display of the objects. It challenged me to tell a story of something as simple as an apple in a kind of "lyrical" way.

Which photographers, if any, have most influenced your work?

Irving Pen and Man Ray

What made you decide to enter the awards?

I entered the awards because for me it’s an exciting way to present my work and it is a true challenge to participate and have my work discussed and - hopefully- selected by the jury!

Have you been working on any exciting projects recently?

Actually, I am working on new non-commercial photographs for 2019! Which we will shoot in the South of France, in Berlin and in Tuscany. Besides my commercial photography which shows a strong trend towards healthy food and fitness.
