Marathon runners get into gear
For the 12th year, we're once again involved in the Virgin Money London Marathon - how time flies! This year we have chosen six keen runners from Beginners2Runners, a running club local to our HQ in Kent, to take up the challenge for us.
Our super six will fashion a Pink Lady® apple costume for the marathon’s full duration, making the 26.2 mile course even more challenging. Their efforts will raise vital funds for Dandelion Time, a Kent-based charity for neglected children.
We caught up with our runners to find out how they’re getting on with their training. For some it’s their very first marathon!
Karen Ruddell, from Beginners2Runners, said: “I have taken part in some 5k and 10k races, completed two half marathons and I am now training for the London marathon. I can’t say that I’m not a little daunted by the prospect of a marathon, but I know I can do this and I am proud to be doing it dressed as a Pink Lady® apple to raise money for Dandelion Time.”
For other runners, it’s their first time running the marathon dressed as an iconic Pink Lady®. Ultra-marathoner Derek Pickles, from Beginners2Runners, said: “The challenge for me this time is being dressed as a Pink Lady® apple! I am proud to be running alongside five other Beginners2Runners and hope to encourage and support them along this journey as I have been supported in previous marathons.”
As part of the preparation for the marathon, we recently invited our apple runners to appear in a series of videos produced by our friends at Gay Star News with lifestyle bloggers Wegan. Keep your eyes peeled on our social media channels for the videos which will give you top tips and training advice.
We wish our six runners the very best of luck!
